Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)[edit | edit source]

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a type of respiratory failure characterized by rapid onset of widespread inflammation in the lungs. Symptoms include shortness of breath (dyspnea), rapid breathing (tachypnea), and bluish skin coloration (cyanosis). For those who survive, a decreased quality of life is common.

Causes may include sepsis, pancreatitis, trauma, pneumonia, and aspiration.

Acute lung injury (ALI)[edit | edit source]

Acute lung injury is a disorder of acute inflammation that causes disruption of the lung endothelial and epithelial barriers.

    Pleurisy[edit | edit source]

Pleurisy, also known as pleuritis, is inflammation of the membranes that surround the lungs and line the chest cavity (pleurae).

Using the carrageenan-induced pleural inflammation model, we demonstrated the ability of SmKI-1 to inhibit early events that trigger neutrophil recruitment in the pleural cavities of mice in response to inflammatory stimuli.
