Some researchers and philanthropists are pursuing the total eradication of helminths because many helminth species cause disease. However, solid scientific evidence shows clearly that total eradication would be folly because millions of years of evolution have created a symbiotic relationship between helminths and humans that provides us with invaluable immune regulation. In the last fifteen years, four safe, mutualistic helminth species have been domesticated and made available commercially so that we are now able to enjoy the benefits of hosting a few of these macroorganisms without the risk of disease. | Some researchers and philanthropists are pursuing the total eradication of helminths because many helminth species cause disease.
